Morning Routine to Rule Mondays

How do you feel when your alarm goes off and it’s Monday morning again?

Do you hit the snooze 5 times or are you out of bed immediately and racing right out the door?

Or maybe you turn off the alarm on your phone and simultaneously jump onto your IG feed? (c’mon girl, stop it!)

Truth is, if you don’t commit to a morning routine the night before, then it’s way too easy to skip it and hit the snooze button.

I know personally, when I hit snooze and skip out on my morning self-care, I end up feeling scattered, groggy, and if I’m honest - a little cranky. So why do we do it? What is that extra 10-20 minutes of sleep really doing for us?

If you follow my Evening Routine recommendations, then you know you can simply schedule those extra minutes of sleep each night by allowing yourself to shut down at an earlier hour. Easier said than done sometimes, so be sure to check out that article. :)

Needless to say, I know you’ve got a lot on your plate these days and maybe you’ve been feeling a little overwhelmed so I wanted to check in and try to make mornings a little easier on you.

Maria’s Morning Practices:

If you can allow yourself an extra 30 minutes in the morning, then I promise you will feel a difference!

Mindfulness

3-5 minutes: As you open your eyes, take a moment to express gratitude for the new day and all the goodness in your life. Next slowly begin to draw your awareness to the room around you, taking in the morning light and checking in with how you’re feeling today.

Meditation

5-10 minutes: Either set a timer, listen to a guided track, or play some chill music - but sit up so you don’t doze off! This will ground you create space for productivity before you step out into your day.

Movement

5-15 minutes: You can implement this in several different ways. You can do gentle stretching while you’re still in bed, or get on the bedroom floor for a little self-led yoga. If you like more of a workout, and choose to make the time for yourself, then schedule a yoga class or hit the gym. Either way, it’s so good to get your body moving first thing in the morning even it’s just for an extra 10 minutes.

To give you an example, here’s my morning routine:

6:00am: Wake up. Mindfulness & Gratitude

6:05am: Meditation

6:15am: Movement and gentle stretching in bed (neck and shoulder rolls, child’s pose, etc)

6:20am: Prep for class (bathroom, brush teeth, etc)

6:35am: Leave for class

6:45am: Yoga

8:15am: Walk my dog

8:30am: Shower & get ready for the day

9:00am: Breakfast

9:15am: Head to work (or log in to work from home)

Truth is, how you take care of you in the morning truly speaks to how the rest of your day is going to go.

So let’s set a high standard for energy, presence, and productivity to get you ready to conquer your week.

Sure, we all have morning tasks that need to get done like getting kids ready for school, or walking the dog - but why not make these 3 self-care morning practices just as much of a priority?

Sure, that likely means waking up a little earlier - but your well-being is so worth that extra time (and your mid-day self will thank you for it)!
